SAVOR Rogue Ales in Washington D.C.

The Brewers Association will return to Washington D.C. for the second annual SAVOR - the premier beer and food pairing event in the United States. Savor offers reception-style samping of 35+ appetizers and 136 craft beers from 68 different breweries. The sold out event will take place in the National Building Museum.

Last year Rogue was selected as one of four dozen brewers to showcase their ales. Rogue Ales was selected to return this year as one of only three breweries from the Pacific Northwest.

The SAVOR event pairs the world’s best ales, porters, stouts and lagers with gourmet foods. Rogue’s Morimoto Imperial Pilsner was made with Iron Chef Morimoto using grains harvested by Grain Millers in Eugene, Oregon. Golden in color with a dry hop floral aroma and intense hop bitterness supported by a big malty backbone which culminates into a hedonistic mouthful. It will be paired with Hibachi Style Grilled Pacific Salmon Skewers.

Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar Ale is a nutty twist to a traditional European Brown Ale - fitting since Oregon is the hazelnut capital of the United States. Eugene homebrewer Chris Studach is on the bottle. It will be paired with Mini Steakhouse Style Grilled Sirloin Sliders.

SAVOR will also offer educational salons with live presentations from brewers, brewery owners, and journalists.

Rogue Ales is a proud supporter of SAVOR. For more information visit here.

Registration Open For Annual Snokona Pond Skim at Mt. Hood Meadows

Online registration is now open for Kona Brewing’s annual celebration of snow, suds and skimming at the 3rd annual Sno‐Kona Pond Skim on Mt. Hood Meadows Saturday, April 25th 2009.

Contestants will launch themselves across a frigid 90‐foot long and 3‐foot deep pond on their snowboards or skis, while onlookers will be treated to Pond Skim hi‐jinks, live
music, Polynesian decor and round‐the‐clock beer sampling. All entrants will be vying for the grand prize of a trip for two to Hawaii, courtesy of All About Hawaii. The event is limited to 100 contestants, so participants should register early here and day‐of registration may open up if available. All participants must be over 21.

The contest has two rounds: in the first round, all participants attempt to skim the
pond, and if successful they move on to the second round which becomes the “skim‐
off” to determine the winner. If more than one contestant makes it to the other side
in round two, prizes will be awarded for the top three places, as well as for the best
splash, best impression made by a woman contestant, and best Hawaiian costume.

“Everyone wins at the Sno‐Kona Pond Skim, and every year it’s a blast,” said Dave
Tragethon, Executive Director of Marketing for Mt. Hood Meadows. “I think with the
economy in the state it’s in, we’re really going to see people putting it out there this
year, trying to win that grand prize trip to Hawaii. No matter what, the Pond Skim is
memorable for all of us—participants, skiers, snowboarders, and the crowd that
turns out to watch here at Meadows.”

Cost to participate in the Pond Skim is $25 per entrant, which includes a Kona towel.
If weather doesn’t cooperate, the Pond Skim will be held the following day on
Sunday, April 26.

2009 Oregon Homebrew Festival

It's time for the 2009 Oregon Homebrew Festival, Oregon's longest running homebrew competition! Once again the festival will be held at Calapooia Brewing in Albany, Oregon.

The competition is sanctioned by the American Homebrews Association and the Beer Judge Certification Program to judge all 28 BJCP styles and, in addition, is a qualifying event for the 2009 Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing (MCAB).

They are looking for BJCP judges, past judges, and new judges to participate in a fun weekend of beer, cider, and mead judging. All judges will receive free lunch and a pint of your favorite beverage from Calapooia Brewing. If you would like to judge at the festival, please register on-line.

This is more than just a homebrew competition, and this year's festival promises to be better than ever with several new features added to create a homebrew festival atmosphere, including a guest speaker, equipment swap and of the course the huge, mega-raffle.

Equipment Swap
They have old pieces of perfectly good equipment from previous setups laying around, collecting dust. Why not clean some space out and help out your fellow brewer who may just be looking for that old brewpot you've outgrown or the counterflow chiller you used before upgrading to a plate chiller? Got an extra carboy? Bring it on in! Looking for an aeration stone? Who knows you just might fine one. And don't forget about all of those miscellaneous pieces from your draft setup you can trade to someone just making the jump to kegging. No item is too small to be swapped, so bring your unused stuff down and make a deal. They'll have an attendant in the area at all times to watch over the equipment and make sure you know when someone is interested.

MEGA Raffle
Buy a ticket for your chance to win fabulous prizes from a wide variety of homebrew shops, breweries and other businesses.

Additional details on the competition, including how, when and where to enter, as well as directions, information for judges, and the festival in general can be found at their website.

Don't miss out on Oregon's premier homebrewing event including the all new equipment swap. Pass the word on to all of your homebrewing friends and we hope to see you all there!

Lake City welcomes The Beer Authority, Seattle's newest beer shop

"You've Been Good, Have A Beer!" written on the front windows of Seattle's newest bottle shop is a thought many people will appreciate. Considering The Beer Authority's vast bottle inventory from breweries around the world, one might think about being good more often.

Their motto is "All Things Beer Sold Here", and they don't disappoint. Along with a wide selection of beers in coolers lining two walls, the store offers kegs to go, glassware, brewery apparel, locally produced beer "munchies" and a healthy selection of wine. Tap rentals, an engraving service and gift baskets are on the way. Beer tastings are held each weekday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and from noon until 6 p.m. on Saturday, each night featuring a different beer from their inventories.

"Browsing the store is easy, and every bottle of beer is individually priced," Said owner and operator Barry Adams. "We have empty six pack holders and encourage shoppers to 'mix and match'." The proprietors, Seattle pub veterans Barry and Shellane Adams, encourage special orders and relish the challenge of finding obscure beers for their customers.

The Beer Authority will be hosting its Grand Opening on April 18th and 19th. Prices across the store will be slashed so if you're looking for that elusive or expensive beer, make sure to attend. Beer tastings with brewers and industry experts will be available the entire weekend so bring your I.D. because you must be 21 years or older to sample.

Located at 12716 Lake City Way NE, Suite A, The Beer Authority is open from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. weeknights, from noon until 6 p.m. on Saturday and from noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday. Their website can be found at here.

Mark your Calendars for the Return of the World's Largest Organic Brewers Festival

The North American Organic Brewers Festival June 26-28th at Overlook Park in Portland, Oregon will feature the world's largest variety of organic beers. Last year's festival featured 75 different organic beers, and drew about 15,000 attendees.

Beers poured at the NAOBF range from pilsner to porter, amber ale to Belgian wit, Irish-style stout to Northwest-style India Pale Ale. With breweries from across North America, England, Scotland, Germany, and Belgium the festival showcased some of the finest organic beers on the planet. Over the last decade organic brewers have carved out a solid niche within the craft brewing movement. Organic beer sales grew from $9 million in 2003 to $19 million in 2005, and to $25 million in 2006, according to the Organic Trade Association.

"I see organic as the next step in the craft brewing revolution's return to traditional beer ingredients and brewing methods," says festival organizer Abram Goldman-Armstrong, of the growing popularity of organic beer.

The NAOBF, presented by Roots Organic Brewing, is in its fifth incarnation, and promotes sustainable living as well as organic beer. Sustainability oriented vendors and non-profits set up alongside brewers. The NAOBF benefits the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, which fights cancer, often caused by agricultural chemicals, the Oregon Tilth, which promotes organic agriculture, and the Oregon Food Bank, which feeds the hungry. A diverse program of music runs throughout the event, and a children's area provides activities for youngsters. Local vendors offer a variety of cuisine from Sweetbriar Farm's pork, to Horn of Africa's spicy organic dishes, to veggie dogs.

NAOBF organizers strive to make this the most earth friendly beer festival in North America. Festival attendees sample beer from compostable corn-starch tasting glasses instead of the heavy plastic mugs used at other beer festivals. Composting and recycling stations are provided for festival waste and food vendors are required to use compostable cutlery and plates. Electricity needs are met with a combination of biodiesel and solar generators, volunteers wear organic cotton and hemp tshirts, and signage is reusable.

The NAOBF will be open from 12-9pm Friday June 26, 12-9pm Saturday June 27, and 12-5pm on Sunday June 28. A tasting glass is $6, and 4 oz. tastes of beer are $1 each. A $1 discount is given in exchange for three cans of organic food for the Oregon Food Bank or presenting a validated MAX light rail ticket.

The NAOBF was first held in 2003 at Port Halling Brewing Company, and since 2006 has been an annual event in Portland, Oregon, one of the greenest cities in North America. Portland is home to two all-organic breweries, NAOBF presenter Roots Organic Brewing Company, and Hopworks Urban Brewery, which debuted its beer at the 2007 NAOBF. A number of other brewpubs in Portland produce significant amounts of organic beer, including Laurelwood, Lucky Lab, and Alameda Brewhouse. Portland also tops the list of bicycle-friendly cities, is a leader in green building, and is home to more breweries than any other city in the world (38).
Overlook Park, between Fremont and Overlook Streets on North Interstate Avenue is located on the Yellow Line MAX, Portland's award winning light-rail system, two stops from downtown Portland. Festival attendees are encouraged to use the MAX, walk, or bike to reduce the carbon-footprint of the event. There is no on-street parking at the site, making responsible transportation the easiest way to reach the event.

Fifth Annual Oregon Cheese Festival Dishes up Delicious Events

Oregon-inspired culinary events will kick off this year's Oregon Cheese Festival in Central Point, Oregon.

To commence the festival, a sumptuous meal introducing guests to participating artisans will be held at the historic U.S. Hotel Ballroom at the Jacksonville Inn in Jacksonville Friday night, March 13th from 6:15 P.M. – 9:00 P.M. Tickets are $70 per person, and are available by calling 866 -396-4704. The dinner will benefit the Oregon Cheese Guild.

Each course of the dinner will spotlight a cheese made by one of the festival's artisans paired with a local wine. Throughout the meal, celebrated cheese columnist and author Janet Fletcher will act as emcee and join the winemakers and cheesemakers in discussing the showcase dishes.

On Saturday March 14th, thousands of visitors will have the opportunity to sample cow, sheep and goat cheese from Oregon and northern California creameries.

"The farmer's market format will present an interactive experience between artisans and visitors, giving everyone an opportunity to talk about the product, the process and learn each individual cheesemaker's story," says David Gremmels, owner with Cary Bryant of Rogue Creamery. "It's a way to truly be connected with the source of the cheese being presented."

Samples and sales will be offered at each booth. Festival music will be provided by Michelle Scheffler and Bruno Grassi, and children are invited to participate in the event's annual coloring contest, sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Oregon.

The Oregon Cheese Festival will be open to the public Saturday, March 14th from 10a.m. to 5 p.m. at Rogue Creamery, 311 North Front St, Central Point, OR.

A $5 entry fee includes tastings and demonstrations. A $5 wine tasting fee includes a commemorative wine glass etched with the Oregon Cheese Guild logo. For more information contact Rogue Creamery at 866-396-4704 or www.roguecreamery.com.
